I’ve got some news to share with you all!
For those of you who may not know me (Chris Abra), I’ve owned and operated South Island Volleyball since May 2011, so it has been a massive part of my life for the past decade. With a young and growing family, I made some tough decisions over the past year about my future with the organization and decided that it was time to find the right partnership to take on this role. It’s been awesome to run programs for such a great community of people in Victoria, but it’s time to ensure our programming continues to grow and improve.
I’m excited to officially announce that South Island Volleyball has a new ownership group, Rex Sports. The team at Rex Sports has been running fantastic basketball (and more recently volleyball) camps, leagues, and programs for the past few years. In working with them on this transition over the past few months, I’ve been able to see the great ideas and new energy that they are bringing to the table.
Once the COVID regulations allow us to, you will see the same programming that you’ve (hopefully) come to love over the past years. I will still be involved with programming and administration for the near future to help ease the transition. The Rex Sports team is committed to ensuring the same quality and caliber of programs, while providing new energy to our social media and all of the “extras” that could go into our leagues and tournaments. They are passionate about providing awesome events that connect with the local community, they’ve raised money for local groups as well as started a scholarship program for young graduating athletes, and (most importantly) they love giving people of all ages plenty of opportunities to play sport!
Just to give you an idea of their energy and capabilities, here’s a great video of an event that they ran this past summer. With limited capacity regulations (no spectators) and lots of regulations to work around, they managed to put on a great 3 Point and Slam Dunk competition that raised thousands of dollars to support a local group.
Thank you all for providing me with such amazing memories, great support, and friendly smiles. This community rocks! Looking forward to a great future for South Island Volleyball and I’m excited to see it grow in new hands! In the meantime, I hope you are all safe and healthy and I can’t wait to see all of us out playing volleyball again really soon.
